In hot, humid climates like the Caribbean, air conditioning can represent most of a building's electricity bill.

The physics behind the saving

Air is the best natural insulator known, and a Framecrete AAC wall is made up of more than 70% air, distributed in millions of sealed micro-cells within a mineral matrix. A 15 cm AAC wall achieves a thermal resistance equivalent to a conventional block wall plus an additional 5–7 cm of insulation — in a single construction process instead of two, and without the risk of mould that appears behind insulators in humid climates.

In a pilot project in an extreme desert climate, a home built 100% with the Framecrete AAC system recorded up to 15°C less interior temperature than the exterior during daytime heat peaks, without active air conditioning, and a measured reduction in cooling electricity consumption of around 32% compared to a traditional home with insulation. Frequently asked questions

Does the saving depend on the climate?+

Yes. In hot climates with intensive air conditioning use — as most of the Caribbean — the saving tends towards the high end of the range. In temperate climates the saving is smaller but remains significant.

Does the initial premium pay itself off through energy savings alone?+

Frequently yes, but that is the conservative reading: adding savings on foundation, structure, schedule, maintenance (no mould) and insurance premiums (non-combustible material), the total cost with AAC tends to be lower than with traditional systems.
